![]() ![]() Social problems (alcohol, drugs, teenage pregnancy) are vehicled by the spoiled brats: Diego (Sergio Gjurinovic) trails behind older sister Andrea (Anahi de Cardenas) as she flits from man to man and substance to substance, his moronic expression veering from distaste to straight-out dyspepsia as he incestuously lusts after her. Lower-class fiancee Elisa (Maricielo Effio) provides the vantage point of an outsider trying to get in. For his social satire of the artistic, scientific and religious pretentions of the rich, helmer Mendez eschews laughs for an aggrieved sense of the ridiculous, as society matrons exchange air kisses and morbid flower arrangements. Commercial outlook appears dim, though Hispanic “dolce vita” may blossom on cable. Unlike Lucrecia Martel’s richly peopled “La Cienaga,” with its variegated classes sliding toward dissolution, Mendez’s film proves as emotionally bankrupt and dead in the water as the sitting ducks it targets. Sophomore helmer Josue Mendez chooses a dual-pronged approach: Whatever stereotypical trait escapes its teenage antiheroes falls squarely in the lap of their father’s social-climbing young fiancee. ![]() Family meller “Dioses” doesn’t leave a chestnut unturned in its exploration of the decadence of the Peruvian upper crust.
